The Fate of Flesh in the Dominion

The Neophytes & Ghost Boy

Every citizen of the Magister's Dominion knows that they will pay the Tax of Blood & Bone when they die. The Final Fate of Flesh demands that their mortal remains will continue to serve the Magisters even after their souls have departed.

Goblin bondservants in the Dominion are denied the privilges of citizenship even as they serve the Dominion body and soul. Their contracts state that even though their souls are their own, their bodies belong to their contract holders.

But the goblins Frailarm and Mealworm died without a bonded contract. The Magisters reanimated their bodies anyway and their enhanced skeletons serve the Magister's Command. Their souls are troubled and they seek justice for their mortal forms.

You hear crying coming from a dark alley. You see the translucent shoulders of a crying Ghost Boy. He hears you and turns around, wiping spectral tears from his blue ethereal skin.

I'm sorry that I'm crying, but I can't help it! I've had friends die before, but these friends were really special!

They were goblins with blue skin and they could see me, even when I was hiding! Frailarm could make ghostly arms and he could arm wrestle me! Mealworm was fun to play hide and sneak with because she was as sneaky as me!

They got killled in someone else's battle and now those mean Magisters have taken their bodies away. Even when they're dead, they're special! Their skeletons can do special things and the necros are using them on the Pit Wall.

But I know my friends weren't under bond! Those slimy wizards have no right to do that to them! They still talk to me. They can't go on until their bodies are at rest. Can you help?

Here's an adventure idea from my world that you could use in your own world with minor changes! I'm making these system agnostic with lots of room for tweaking.

One of my favorite decisions you've made with these is the inversion of the typical "World of Wizard's Peak" form, where we start with quotes from Sarge and the other guy who's also awesome but whose name I can't remember. Here we get the sort of God's-eye-view description first, and then the Ghost Boy quote, and I think that's really working well for you. Good work!

Thank you! It's developing as I go and I think it needs a tweak or two, but I'm enjoying it!

Awww, this is such a sad premise. I hope some adventurers help them.

Thanks for reading! These were NPCs in one of my games that were casualties in campaign drama. The players were pretty upset, but it made a great game.

That's not fair! I really like this bit of worldbuilding, with the tax of blood and bone.
