Adobo Night Tradition / Ritual in World of Wizard's Peak | World Anvil

Adobo Night

We all know the apotropaic properties of garlic, salt, and vinegar. Those three things just so happen to combine into something I'm told is quite delicious. We soulforged do not experience smell and taste the way that the flesh-born do. But we do enjoy camaraderie and we enjoy spending Adobo Nights with our friends.

We Kirinalos have adobo in our blood. I've eaten so much of it, when you cut me, I smell like vinegar and garlic! It's Adobo Night, you know what I'm having!

The Smell of Home Cooking

On the nights before Faerie and Shadow, when the Feywild and Shadowfell appear, the folk of The Kirinal Pit, the Kirinalos, fortify themselves. They prepare delicious meals of meat or poultry simmered in garlic, vinegar, and soy sauce. Served over rice, these simple delicious ingredients repel the bad spirits coming the next day.

The lands around the Kirinal Pit are replete with all sorts of nasty minor creatures that have crept in around the edges from other worlds. Walls, armies, and fortresses can keep out invasions and dark monstrosities, they do less well against pests and creepy-crawlies. Sometimes, the old folkways provide the easiest solutions.

To combat them, the Kirinalos have adopted a diet sure to repel these supernatural annoyances. Garlic, salt, and vinegar are well known for repelling monsters, fairies, and the undead. They can be found in any good abjurer's component pouch and they make a great foundation for a delicious meal.

History

When normal people started moving into the Kirinal Concordance Zone they had to build their lives amidst swarms of boggarts and beasties that had snuck into the world under their noses. They took to carrying around silver, iron, garlic, and salt to repel minor monstrosities.

They adopted the folkways and diets of common people used to dealing with the supernatural. The cuisine of the Talinos, already based in salty garlicky dishes, proved an ideal and tasty solution.

Components and tools

  • 3 lbs chicken or pork (I like pork belly) cut into portions
  • 1 head garlic
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup vinegar
  • 1 cup soy sauce
  • 3 bay leaves
  • 1 tsp peppercorn
  • 5 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tsp sugar

Instructions

  1. Marinate the meat at least 1 hour before cooking.
  2. Crush the garlic, remove the skin, and grind the salt into the cloves with the flat of your knife.
  3. The peppercorns can be whole, crushed, or ground. My lola put them in whole, but I grind them when I'm making adobo for children.
  4. Combine the soy sauce, crushed garlic, pepper, and meat together. Mix well and marinate for up to 4 hours.
  5. 30 minutes before the meal, heat up a cast iron pot or pan over medium-high heat and add the oil.
  6. Remember to reserve the marinade. Do not toss it out.
  7. If you have pork, parboil it in the water first.
  8. When the oil is sizzling, fry the chicken for 2 minutes per side. Put in the parboiled pork and fry it 2 minutes per side.
  9. Pour in the reserved marinade and the water.
  10. Bring to a boil.
  11. Add bay leaf and peppercorn, lower the heat and simmer for 30 minutes or until the meat is tender.
  12. Mix vinegar and sugar, pour it in, and cook for 10 minutes.
  13. Serve over white rice and enjoy the apotropaic benefits!
