Demontouched Traits

The Demontouched are said to be the cursed progeny of interaction with a demon. Perhaps when you, your eternal soul, or an ancestor made a deal with a demon, got possessed, cursed, or otherwise afflicted with the presence of a demon, this history passed on down the family line. As such, Demontouched (or the Người Quỷ in Tiếng Phú) spontaneously arise in the population; usually the Human populations, though other races are "afflicted". They are generally treated with disdain in most of Sếu Nam Thổ, relegated to the outskirts of societies; an exception is in some Người Nguyệt and Snakekin communities, where they are sometimes accepted as equals or even folk to be worshipped. The mark of the demontouched are deformed features, exaggerated or animal parts, and an innate magic. Some demontouched do not exhibit as many traditionally devillish traits as others and can pass at a distance for human, but heartbreakingly, many of the more "different"-looking demontouched never make it to adulthood, being mistaken as real demons long before then. This is due to a lack of understanding around the demontouched and their naturally low numbers - perhaps making up only 0.5% of all of Sếu Nam Thổ. As demontouched, you gain the following traits.
   

Physical Deformity

The demonic magic that permeates you does not leave your body unscarred. Below is a table of physical deforities found among the demontouched. When creating a character, feel free to pick and choose from this list. If you are unsure, roll one 1d8. Be aware this may be a sensitive issue for some people and may be omitted.

Demontouched mature at the same rate as humans but live on average a few years longer.
   

Philosophy & Morality

Người Quỷ might not have an innate tendency toward evil, but many of them end up there, either due to temptation or cỉcumstance. Many live hard lives, fending for themselves since children and can form loose bands, often grow up into highwaymen, gangs, or members criminal organisations and becoming the very thing people fear them for. Despite this, this is far from a rule and many demontouched simply live trying lives as scavengers or pilgrims, repentent for crimes they may never have committed themselves.
   

Size

Người Quỷ are generally about the same size and build as humans. Your size is Medium.
   

Darkvision

Thanks to your infernal heritage, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
   

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Tiếng Phú (whichever register is most appropriate) and one other language befitting your background and origin.
   

Demontouched Archetypes

The demontouched fall in a few groups, here called "Archetypes".

     

Hellfire & Hellfrost Devils (Quỷ Nhiệt Dịa Ngục và Quỷ Cóng Dịa Ngục)

Both Hellfire and Hellfrost Devil archetypes have abnormally large canine teeth, goat or antelope horns, and an oft impressive scowl. Hellfire demontouched often have traits such as reddish, blackened, or burned skin; are hot to the touch; breath out flames or smoke from their nose; cry blood; and may even be born with an inherent fear of those around them. Hellfrost demontouched display different traits, like blue or pale skin; blackened extremities (reminiscent of frostbite are cold to the touch; covered in blisters; unable to stop their teeth from chattering; or perhaps plagued by an innate loneliness. The luckiest demontouched of this archetype are otherworldly beauties with strange skin, fangs, and horns - but many are not so lucky and exhibit large tusk-like teeth, permanent scowls, and painful afflictions or disabilities. Those who believe in Hell (Địa Ngục, or "Earth Prison"; subterranean internment for torturing and purifying souls) often believe one is born like these Người Quỷ if you make a deal with a devil in hell to reincarnate early, whereas others believe the Hellfire Devils are marked because of a cruel past life and Hellfrost Devils are likewise marked for a past life's selfishness. Many Người Nguyệt tribes consider them the progeny of fire or ice demons; for those who survive into adulthood, they may be ascribed the task of being a spiritual defender for the tribe and expected to scare away real demons.

Legacy of Purification

When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the hellish rebuke spell as a 2nd-level spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest; furthermore, the type of damage you choose in your Resistance to Hellish Heat or Hoar ability is reflected in the type of damage your Hellish Rebuke spell takes, ie. if you choose resistancd to cold damage, your hellish rebuke spell does cold damage.

Rakshasa (La Sát)

The Rakshasa Demontouched are named for their demigod counterparts, the Rakshasa. Not all Rakshasa (or La Sát in Tiếng Phú) are evil demons, and maybe because of this, in the Western regions of Sếu Nam Thổ where the Rakshasa demontouched are most prevalent, they are not hated as much as they are feared. They are rumoured to be evidence of Rakshasa heritage - most specifically of a seduction of their ancestor by the lustful beings. La Sát demontouched exhibit a hard-to-satisfy hunger and a few (rarely many) of the following traits: a long, feline tail; reddish hair; blue or red eyes; mane-like facial hair; claw-like fingers or feet; fangs; goat or serow horns; goblin-like ears; and a knack for illusion magic. Some Rakshasa demontouched have an otherworldly allure, while others have the charm of a snarling tiger. They are popular recruits for guards and soldiers among the elite Bhattayalang.

Feline Agility

Your reflexes and agility allow you to move with a burst of speed. When you move on your tum in combat, you can double your speed until the end of the tum. Once you use this trait, you can't use it again until you move O feet on one of your turns.

Blight Demon (Quỷ Sâu Bệnh)

Blight demontouched get the worst rep in Sếu Nam Thổ, no doubt about it. Born only during years of great pestilence, these demontouched are expected to be the curses of demons who bring plagues, blights, and famines. Only a few of the Người Nguyệt tribal groups see blight demontouched in a positive light, associating them with mushrooms, beetles, bamboo. It's widely assumed that interacting with a Blight demontouched will get you sick and they are treated much like lepers: shunned from society. Your appearance won't help with that, as a blight demon is marked by a few (though rarely many) uncomfortable traits such as: deer antlers; overly-moist, dry, or forever-rotting skin; alopecia; potato eyes & sprouts or fungal growths; foul-smelling; perpetual nausea; or various trypophobia-inducing holes across the face, limbs, and body.

Drowned Demon (Quỷ Chết Đuối)

Drowned demontouched are incredibly rare and not much is known about them. They are usually born in coastal cities and villages, though rarely also along the major rivers and lakes. They are the predominant demontouched seen amongst the Walo people, who generally hide the Drowned in boat communities away from the mainland. The number of Drowned demontouched in Sếu Nam Thổ, barring the Walo (where they are notoriously common), at any given moment is probably in the 10s, and they are considered notorious omens. Each town handles the birth of a Drowned demontouched differently - for some, it is an ill, esoteric omen, while others see it as the chance to pogrom and clear out the demontouched for fear of the ills the future holds. Across Sếu Nam Thổ, the Drowned are connected with local urban myths of sea monsters and deep sea demons. Your appearance is especially unnerving, though not necessarily hideous. You can be identified as a Drowned demontouched by a few (though rarely many) uncomfortable traits such as: tentacles in your hair; row(s) of unnaturally pointy teeth; cold, clammy skin; eyes of white, deep-blue, blue-green, or even pitch black; an extra eyelid; webbed fingers & toes; covered in an eel-like slime; have ceaseless nightmares of the ocean; or hear whispers in lapping water.

Bitter Mouth Demon (Quỷ Dộc Miệng)

Bitter Mouth demontouched are named for their natural penchant for manipulation and cruel, slicing tongues. You pass in society a lot easier than other demontouched, but it's the traits you can't see that are perhaps the most numerous, such as: a forked tongue; a permanent, bitter taste in your mouth; cat-like or snake-like eyes; white hair; a hard-to-control temper; linguistic and/or literary prowess; a natural callousness; some fused toes or fingers; an inherent selfishness; and at their most powerful - enthralling magic. The best of these folk are skilled philosophers, poets, and bureaucrats, while the worst are abusive and manipulative.

Chaos Demon (Quỷ Hỗn Loạn)

Chaos demontouched are spontaneously born at random in the population of Humans of Sếu Nam Thổ and are unfortunately frequently killed at birth due to their truly demonic appearance. Many traits associated with these demontouched include: three eyes (or more) ; twisting horn-like growths or tentacles; long, thick tails; extra fingers or toes; fangs or tusks; strongly marked body and facial patterns in unusual skin tones; uncontrollable arcane energies; and uncontrollable urges.

Chaotic Fortitude

Your hit point maximum increases by half your level (minimum of 1).
   

Legacy of Entropy

Each time you finish a long rest, you gain the ability to cast cantrips and spells randomly determined from a short list. Roll 1d6 to determine your spells for that day. If you recieve the same set of spells as the previous day you rolled for, roll again.
At 1st level, you can cast a cantrip. When you reach 3rd level, you can also cast a 1st-level spell. At 5th level, you can cast a 2nd-level spell. You can cast a spell gained from this trait only once until you complete your next long rest.
You can cast a cantrip gained from this trait at will, as normal. For 1st-level spells whose effect changes if cast using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, you cast the spell as if using a 2nd-level slot. Spells of 2nd level are cast as if using a 2nd-level slot. At the end of each long rest, you lose the cantrips and spells previously granted by this feature, even if you did not cast them.
You replace those cantrips and spells by rolling for new ones on the Entropic Arcana Spells list. Roll separately for each cantrip and spell. If you roll the same spell or cantrip you gained at the end of your previous long rest, roll again until you get a different result.

Spider Demon (Quỷ Nhện)

You are far more likely to find a Spider demontouched abandoned and feral in a cave than you are any town or city, and as such they become their own type of demon, more material than real Quỷ from which they are rumoured to come. They have four arachnid-like legs sprouting from their back and may have additional round, black eyes, or other spider-like features. Rather than being the direct progeny of a spider demon, myths tell that they are born as a curse on the children of humans who found themselves trapped in one a spider demon's schemes but slight them and escape. Real Spider Demons are not necessarily evil, but they are malevolent maneater nature spirits and should be treated as such; this may not carry over to the Spider demontouched inherently, but under the circumstances where a child grows wild, savage, and hungry in abandonment, there may not be much functional difference when they catch you in their web.

Monstrous Demon (Qủy Quái Vật)

The Monstrous Demontouched are a poorly defined archetype; a catchall term for the variety of features associates with curses from various nature spirits & demons. A common feature, though not universal, are the bovine horns they often sport. Other features may be a body and face covered in hair; boar-like tusks; green, brown, or black eyes; oozing slime; hooved feat; small, hairy tails; unusually long arms; fearful, territorial temperament; a dog-like face; poor eyesight; keen sense of smell; and a variety of arcane powers. They are not as hated as the other demontouched, but they are just as feared and still generally seen as a mark to degrade your entire family.

Malevolent Resistance

Void Demon (Quỷ Hư Vô)

These demontouched are typically only heard of in rumours and never in full detail. The most helpful information seems to come from a nameless ancient Bhattayalang scholar and philosopher, who claims they are associated with the element of aether, metal, or the void. And thus should be associated with such demons, though no such demons are known. There is an unsettling appearance to a Void demontouched, something about the way they look past you. Other traits include, but are not limited to: tentacles on the head, face, or body; extra eyes; shifting skin; limbs, fingers, nipples, etc. where they shouldn't be, such as a toenails embedded along your spine; metal growing out of the body; an unnerving body form, such as an exceptionally long, slender torso and arms, but short, stout legs (or vice versa) ; an extra row of teeth; an inherent paranoia; or psionic powers.

Legacy of a Mental Prison
