Traditionally, gnolls that cling to their demonic heritage celebrate their victories by performing depraved rituals and making blood offerings to their creator, Zaguna. Sometimes the Daughter of Death rewards her worshippers by allowing one of them to be possessed by a demonic spirit. Marked as Zaguna's favorite, the lucky recipient becomes a Fang of Zaguna, the chosen of the Hyena Goddess. In much the same way Zaguna created the first gnolls, a hyena that feasts on a fang's slain foe undergoes a horrible transformation, becoming a full-grown adult gnoll. Depending on the number of hyenas in a region, a Fang can lead to a startling increase in a cackle's population. Only through the death of the Fang can the demonic spirit be released and the population of gnolls kept in check.
