Once Attuned the user can cast the spell Animate dead to control a single ritually created undead till the caster releases the undead or the orb is destroyed. The constraints of the spell Animate dead remains except the time constraint.   The orb can be destroyed by either smashing it, pouring holy water on it or exposing it to sun light for a week straight.
