The Volenic Dwarves are heirs to an ancient lineage of master crafters, miners, and warriors. For thousands of years, their ancestors dwelled deep within the mountains, forging immense underground citadels like Bamak-Zel. The Volenic Dwarves’ connection to stone and metal is nearly spiritual; they believe that every piece of rock holds a fragment of the world’s essence and that every strike of the hammer binds them closer to the soul of the earth.
  Physiology and Endurance
Short, stocky, and resilient, Volenic Dwarves are physically adapted to their life in the mountains and underground. With broad shoulders and powerful limbs, they are built for strength and stamina. Their thick, hardy skin is capable of withstanding the heat of the forge and the chill of deep caverns. Volenic Dwarves possess deep, robust lungs, allowing them to work for hours in the mines without tiring. They are highly resistant to poison and environmental hazards, a necessity given their long history of mining volatile materials deep within the earth.
  Masters of Craft and Metal
Craftsmanship is the central tenet of Volenic Dwarven culture. To them, a crafted object is not merely a tool or weapon but a piece of their soul, forged into reality by their skill and dedication. They are renowned for their weapons and armor, which are sought after across Avanté for their quality and durability. Many Volenic Dwarves take immense pride in their craft, spending weeks, months, or even years perfecting a single masterpiece.
  Dragon Slayers
The most defining aspect of Volenic Dwarven history is their reputation as dragon slayers. For generations, these dwarves have battled dragons and their kin, driven by an ancient hatred of the creatures. This enmity runs deep in their blood, manifesting in their ability to withstand the terrors of dragonkind and deal devastating blows to the creatures. Many Volenic Dwarves forge special weapons for the express purpose of slaying dragons, and families pass down heirlooms enchanted by the blood of the great wyrms they have slain.
  Survival in the Depths
Living deep beneath the mountains has cultivated a keen sense of survival in the Volenic Dwarves. They are pragmatic and unyielding, able to endure harsh environments and long, brutal winters. Their resilience is legendary; they are capable of working in the most extreme conditions, be it the suffocating heat of their forge-cities or the frigid tunnels of the north. Every dwarf is trained from a young age in mining, crafting, and warfare, ensuring they are always prepared for the many dangers lurking beneath the surface.
  Mountain Communities and Governance
Volenic Dwarves tend to live in tight-knit communities, each led by a thane who oversees both civil and military matters. Their society is deeply hierarchical, but also meritocratic—leadership is earned through deeds, especially in craftsmanship or battle. While they technically answer to The Seat of Tir Volen, Volenic Dwarves are highly independent, with their own traditions and laws governing their mountain cities.
  Religion and the Spirit of the Forge
While magic is not common among the Volenic Dwarves, many of them revere the forge and the earth itself as sacred. Their spiritual leaders, known as Stonepriests, commune with the mountain, seeking its wisdom before making important decisions. Some even claim to speak with the echoes of their ancestors within the stone, giving them guidance on their craft or in times of war.
  Isolation and Strength in Unity
Volenic Dwarves prefer isolation from the wider world, focusing on perfecting their craft, mining the depths, and keeping their communities safe. They are slow to trust outsiders, and even slower to change their ways. However, they are fiercely loyal to one another and will defend their kin to the last. While they may seem cold or distant, those who earn a Volenic Dwarf’s friendship have found a companion who will stand beside them through any trial.

Volenic Dwarves hold onto their ancestral names with great pride. Their names are usually guttural and heavy, often symbolizing aspects of the earth or their profession.

age: Volenic Dwarves mature at the same rate as humans, but they are considered young until they reach the age of 50. On average, they live about 350 years.
alignment: Volenic Dwarves tend to lean toward lawful alignments, valuing order, tradition, and the preservation of their ancient customs. Their deep-seated animosity toward dragons sometimes leads them toward intense, unwavering vengeance.

Darkvision
Accustomed to the deep caverns beneath the mountains, Volenic Dwarves have superior vision in the dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
  Dwarven Resilience
You have advantage on saving throws against poison, and you have resistance against poison damage.
  Stonecunning
Whenever you make an Intelligence (History) check related to the origin of stonework, you are considered proficient in the History skill and add double your proficiency bonus to the check, instead of your normal proficiency bonus.
  Legacy of Dragon Slayers
Volenic Dwarves are born with an innate resistance to dragons and their minions due to their long history of battling draconic forces. You have advantage on saving throws against the frightful presence of dragons, and your attacks with weapons you craft yourself deal an additional 1d4 damage against dragons.
  Master Smiths and Miners
You are proficient with both smith’s tools and mason’s tools. Additionally, when crafting armor or weapons, you may craft one additional item per week of downtime. Items crafted by you are always considered to be of masterwork quality, and non-magical weapons and armor you create provide a +1 bonus (this does not stack with magical bonuses).
