Volenic Gnoll

Physiology

Gnolls are tall and powerful, with muscular frames and digitigrade legs, which give them great speed and agility. Their bodies are covered in coarse fur, which helps protect them from the elements, and they have sharp claws and strong jaws that make them formidable in both unarmed and armed combat. Their eyes are adapted for low-light environments, allowing them to hunt in the dark, and their ears are highly sensitive, able to pick up the faintest sounds. A gnoll’s sense of smell rivals that of a bloodhound, and they can track their prey across vast distances. Despite their size, gnolls are quick and nimble, capable of moving with surprising grace and silence when necessary.

Shamanistic Heritage

Volenic Gnolls maintain a deep spiritual connection with the world around them. Their shamanistic traditions teach them to respect the balance of nature and the spirits that inhabit the world. Many gnolls believe that the spirits of the land, animals, and ancestors guide them in their daily lives. Shamans, or Spiritwalkers, play an essential role in their society, acting as intermediaries between the physical and spiritual worlds. Through rituals, meditation, and communing with the spirit world, gnoll shamans seek wisdom, protection, and power from these unseen forces. Their spiritual practices also often focus on weather prediction, healing, and guidance for the hunt, making them revered figures in gnoll packs.

Thrill Seeking

Gnolls have a natural inclination toward adventure and thrill. They are drawn to danger, seeking challenges that test their physical prowess, cunning, and endurance. This makes them restless and constantly on the move, exploring new territories or hunting elusive and dangerous prey. Their drive for thrill-seeking also pushes them to engage in feats of bravery or daring, often taking risks that others might shy away from. For a Volenic Gnoll, the thrill of the hunt is not just a way of life—it’s a fundamental part of their identity.

Pack Bonds

The gnoll pack is the most crucial element of their society. Loyalty to the pack is absolute, and gnolls believe that their strength lies in their unity. A gnoll without a pack is considered lost or cursed, and those who betray their pack are seen as committing the greatest sin. These bonds are built on mutual trust, respect, and a shared love for the hunt. Each gnoll plays a vital role within the pack, and they work seamlessly together in combat, hunting, and daily life. The death of a packmate is a deeply emotional experience for gnolls, and rituals of mourning and remembrance are a key part of their culture.

Knack for Survival

Volenic Gnolls are survivors above all else. Their instincts for hunting, foraging, and enduring harsh environments are unmatched. From finding water in barren deserts to reading the stars for navigation, they are masters of survival techniques. This makes them excellent companions in dangerous adventures or perilous expeditions, where their keen senses and adaptability can mean the difference between life and death.

race features:
Darkvision
Your keen senses and nocturnal hunting instincts grant you the ability to see in the dark. You can see in dim light within 60 feet as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
  Tooth & Claw
You possess sharp claws and powerful jaws, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. When you hit with them, you deal 1d6 + Strength modifier slashing damage (claws) or piercing damage (bite). These are considered natural weapons with which you are proficient.
  Survivor's Instinct
You have proficiency in either the Survival or Perception skill (your choice). Gnolls are instinctively attuned to the wild, making them adept at finding food, shelter, and tracking their prey.
  Thrill of the Hunt
Once per long rest, when you score a critical hit with a weapon or natural weapon attack, you gain temporary hit points equal to your Constitution modifier + your level. This reflects the surge of adrenaline gnolls feel when succeeding in battle or challenge.
  Shamanic Heritage
You have a deep connection to the spiritual and shamanistic traditions of your people. You can cast the guidance cantrip. Once you reach 3rd level, you can cast hunter's mark once per day. At 5th level, you can cast augury once per day. Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
  Pack Bonds
As a gnoll, you have a deep bond with your pack. You gain advantage on your first attack roll per turn against a creature if at least one of your allies is within 5 ft of the creature and the ally isn't incapacitated.
