Ball and Chain

Weapon

Uncommon

Properties

Heavy

Small creatures have disadvantage on attack rolls with heavy weapons. A heavy weapon’s size and bulk make it too large for a Small creature to use effectively.

Special, Reach

To utilize the Reach property of this weapon, the wielder must be proficient with Ball and Chain (Martial, Melee) and have a Strength Attribute of 14 or greater. This weapon adds 5 feet to your reach when you attack with it, as well as when determining your reach for opportunity attacks with it.

Special, Thrown (20/40)

To utilize the Thrown property of this weapon, the wielder must be proficient with Ball and Chain (Martial, Melee). A Large or smaller creature hit by a thrown ball and chain is restrained until it is freed as its chain wraps around the creature. A ball and chain has no effect on creatures that are formless, or creatures that are Huge or larger. A creature can use its action to make a DC 15 Dexterity check to allow itself or another creature within its reach to escape on a success. Alternatively, a creature can use its action to make a DC 20 Strength check to attempt to break the chain and free itself or another creature.

Versatile

This weapon can be wielded one-handed or two-handed. If wielded with one-hand, it will deal 1d6 in bludgeoning damage plus an additional 1d2 in piercing damage. If wielded with two-hands, it will deal 1d8 in bludgeoning damage plus an additional 1d4 in piercing damage.

Description

This gigantic metal sphere is lined with sparse spikes, and attached to a metal chain. The primary source of damage comes from the heavy weight and bludgeoning force of the metal sphere, with the spikes providing an additional increase to piercing damage. It is designed to be swung from the chain itself like a heavy flail, or thrown like a gigantic sling bullet.

The length of the chain enables this weapon to have a reach which exceeds the range of typical weapons, but the combined weight of the ball and the chain makes it unwieldy for those who are small or lack the necessary strength. Throwing the weapon potentially restrains the target as the chain wraps around them.
