Chapter 3

Weeks past, and the various tasks of running an Empire took up Pentergost's time and occupied his mind. One day, when Pentergost was administering to the supply lines for their Elthine slaves, he was told that they had selected a fine slave warrior to act as his personal guard. She had a unique resistance to psionic probing and would be able to defend him from other powerful Illithids. This warrior had been a champion in the gladiatorial pit many times and had proved herself worthy of the Illithids trust through unfettering loyalty. As he was being told this, Pentergost felt his heart leap in his chest, then quickly sent icy thoughts down into his body to suppress such emotions, it did not matter if it was her or not, she was his slave. He returned to his chambers, finding his new bodyguard waiting for him. And yes, of course, it was the fighter that he had found himself so enamored with. She stood there with a new longsword of stone strapped across her back and fine leather armor decorating her body. Her sunken nose and glowing orange eyes were fixed on Pentergost and held high with proper demeanor. The soft light coming from his room window illuminated her lean frame and the soft yellow skin covering her beautiful body. Gods what majesty! Pentergost shook himself and forced himself to walk in, sparing a glance at the heads of his former enemies, and resumed his role as Emperor.
"You must be my new bodyguard yes?"
"Ye-"
"Good, close the doors and stand watch outside now. That will be all.", Pentergost waved his hand in dismissal and began slurping a chalice of juice squeezed from a dying Elthine's brain leaning back in his chair.
"Well that was rude, no wonder you are all alone up here" the Elthine slave responded with a hint of amusement. Pentergost sputtered with his face in the chalice, caught off guard, then wiped all the fluids off his face and glared upwards at the Elthine, who stood there with one eyebrow slightly raised and the ghost of a smile on her lips.
Pentergost summoned all of his psionic powers around him as he said, "You.... How... Why would... How dare you speak to your Emperor like that!?"
She merely scoffed and casually walked a few steps away to lean one shoulder casually on the wall, "Sorry uh... sir but you're going to have to get used to it, I speak my mind and can't help it, won't change it in fact. Part of the deal I'm afraid." Pentergost felt like his blood was boiling. He had been made a fool of by a mere slave. Luckily there was no one around so he would not have to kill them to keep the fact hidden. Before he could say something, she chimed in again using her silky voice with an under-note of depth to it, "Look, I know and I'm sorry that you can't handle anyone talking back to you but if you are going to survive you are going to have to get used to it. You know of the plot to overthrow you by a shadowy group of your underlings I assume?" Pentergost nodded his head, glaring at her the whole time. "Good, I thought so. Otherwise why would you isolate the best fighter of the Elthine people as your personal guard. If you don't have me at your side for the times to come, you will die. And you know it too." She smiled beautifully at him, and despite himself, Pentergost almost smiled back, "So you need me."
Pentergost sighed and sat back down, she was right. He had uncovered a plot to overthrow him by a group of nobles that had been loyal to the previous Emperor shortly after the gladiator fight where he had first witnessed this Elthine woman. Together, they were powerful and he needed the best to be at his side and ensure his protection, and this warrior was the best. He said, "You are right, I acknowledge it. What is your name slave?"
She flashed a brilliant smile again, "My name is Gith, but anyone who comes after you can call me ‘death’."
Pentergost stifled a chuckle at such a mundane joke, one unfit for the courts of the Illithid Empire. "Good, well Gith I suppose we can mutually benefit from each other." Falling back on habit, Pentergost began to assess Gith. As he did, he forced himself to push away any thoughts of running his hands along her body, feeling the waves of the curves and taking her into his arms into a deep embrace. He needed to look at her properly. He saw and acknowledged her beauty, the way that she held herself told him she was powerful, a great warrior indeed, and a sparkle of intelligence beneath her eyes that spurred a small amount of unease in the bottom of Pentergost's stomach. She would do well as his guard. Pentergost composed himself and said, "Very well, I believe you will do well as my bodyguard. Let's keep the death talk to a minimum though, I don't want my people thinking I walk around bringing ‘death’ with me wherever I go. Bad for my public image." Gith snorted a laugh as she exited, smiling at Pentergost and closing the doors behind her. It had been a unique laugh, more of a chortle unfit for such a beautiful figure, one others would surely find annoying but Pentergost found intoxicating. He realized as he sat in his bed-chambers, now under the protection of Gith from outside, that he would do almost anything to hear that laugh again. How unfit for the Illithid Emperor.
