Though often considered commoners, shepherds throughout the world of Holos live a rough and often dangerous life. Raiders both from within and without their pastoral community may seek to steal their flocks or endanger their lives. This is to say nothing of the hungry monsters and mundane predators hunt them and their flocks for food. As a result, many of these pastoralists are experienced in the basics of combat and know a great deal about animal handling, making them no ordinary peasant pushover.
Shepherds typically graze their animals wherever grass and food is abundant as well as where they can keep a close eye on all of their flock. Grasslands, hills, steppes, scrubland, and even more marginal environments such as forests, deserts, and mountains all boast populations of pastoralists, shepherds, and herding nomads.
