The Lantern is not actually a lantern at all, but a sophisticated magical device, which can stop or mitigate the effect of missiles fired at the holder or those surrounding him. The lantern contains 8 faces, with a spring, contained internally for each face, which can be cocked with the use of a special tool. When a missile such as an arrow, bolt, javelin, dart, etc passes within 5ft of the lantern, the holder rolls a d8. If the number rolled is equal to or below the number of remaining cocked springs in the lantern, the lantern prevents 10d+5 damage from the missile attack. If the damage is reduced to zero, the arrow is broken in the air and never connects.   This effect works similar to a Monk's Deflect Arrow mechanic.
